Following on from our last post about Autocad line weights, plot styles etc — we have had a query from one of our readers about what the standards are for line weights when drawing, for example, windows, walls and so on.

So, to make it easy for you guys we have put together a template model file for you to download. The model file contains basic standard layers to use when drawing.

The colours of these layers correspond with the plot style file that you can also download here. We figured this was the easiest way to demonstrate the standard line weights for objects. This is super simple — either save the dwg file and use it every time you start a new drawing — this way the layers are already set up.

Or, you can copy and paste the layers from the template file into your own drawing. The plot style file is for when you print or pdf a drawing.

This contains the line weights that correspond with the layer colours. All you need to do is put the ctb file into the plot style location. Then when you go to plot, select plot style, and find the FIA plotstyle template.

It has been some time since I had any personal involvement in the editing of a Layer Standard, but in the past few weeks there have been a number of inquiries in the Autodesk Discussion Groups about Layer Standards. Being the pack rat that I am, I have copies of all of the old Brain Dumps on various hard drives and other storage devices, so I am not personally affected by this "loss". Anyone wishing to jump in Mr. Before I totally forget what I learned from both Matt and my own ventures into Layer Standards, and to partially rectify the loss of the nicely formatted version of the Brain Dump that had been available, I thought it might be worthwhile to put together a blog post on the subject.

Even if you intend to make use of the out-of-the-box Layer Standard most appropriate for the area of the world in which you work, understanding how that Layer Standard works will be helpful, particularly if, like the AIA Version 3 Layer Standard, not all of the officially sanctioned field values for all disciplines are included in the out-of-the-box Layer Standard. A Layer Standard is a way of defining a layer naming convention in which the layer name is composed of consistent "Descriptive Fields," or sub-sections.

One or more of these Component Fields are then combined into Descriptive Fields, which are the building blocks the user will see. Once you have defined the Descriptive Fields, you can "Edit Descriptions," where you can enter allowable values for each of the Descriptive Fields and enter a description. These values become the values that you can select when building a layer name in the Layer Properties Manager or in a Layer Key Style, and the descriptions can be made part of the layer description that shows in the Description column of the Layer Properties Manager.

The Layer Standard does not define any layers, but does contain the rules for creating layer names that comply with the Layer Standard, as well as pre-defined field values to speed the creation of a new layer name. The Layer Standard also does not prevent you from creating a non-compliant name, but it will not allow such a layer name to be associated with that Layer Standard.

Analyzing Your Layer Naming Convention The first step, before you venture into creating a Layer Standard of your own, would be to analyse your layer naming convention and determine if you can break your layer names into separate fields, and then determine what rules apply to each of the fields.

If the way you name your layers can not be broken down into separate fields with predictable positioning and lengths, then a Layer Standard is not for you. I will do this with the out-of-the-box AIA Version 3 Layer Standard, since that is the standard with which I am most familiar, with apologies to those from other areas where a different Layer Standard and associated Layer Key Style is the norm. The AIA Version 3 Layer Standard can be broken down as follows: Discipline Designator: A one- or two-alphabetic-character field that designates the discipline associated with that layer.

The first, required character designates the discipline, and the optional second character designates a sub-discipline within the main discipline. Major: A four-alphabetic-character field designating the "major" building system to which the layer applies.

Minor 1: A four-character field designating a "minor" building sub-system or other layer modifier to which the layer applies. Minor 2: A four-character field designating a second "minor" building sub-system or other layer modifier to which the layer applies. Status: A single-character field designating the construction "status" of the layer new work, existing to demolish, existing to remain, phase number, etc. You do not want to lose work you thought would be saved to this bug in There may be other country- or region-specific standards files that are made available in those countries and regions as well.

While you are learning about this feature, I would not recommend editing the out-of-the-box styles in any of the source files. To Import Layer Standards

The layer can be assigned properties such as linewieght, line type and colour and can be made visible or hidden, amongst other things. You can use layers in a drawing for each different object type or construction element. Windows can have their own layer, furniture can have its own layer and so on. Layers should be used in every drawing, no matter how large or small the project.

If you are an architectural practice it is important to adopt a standardised system, or stick to a standard set of layers if you are a student, not only for good practice but also because layering your drawings can save you a huge amount of time.

Layers allow us much more control over a drawing, and ultimately allow us to save time and money. By using a good layering system we can allocate properties to a layer and ensure the appropriate element is assigned to that layer. In AutoCAD layers are also very useful for setting up layouts and plot sheets. They allow us to control what information is viewed on different drawings.

For example, on a site plan, we would only want basic elements to be seen, so the layers that are not necessary can be switched off in that particular viewport. We would keep landscaping layers switched on, but we would turn off mechanical and electrical layers, or annotations that would be better suited to a more detailed plan, for example. Another benefit of using layers is that you can select and modify items in bulk on a particular layer. Instead of individually selecting items that you wish to copy or amend, you can quick select all items on a layer if the drawing has been layered correctly.

So, I hope I have convinced you that using layers is a fundamental part of the drawing process. The next question is, what layers should I use?

There are a few different classification systems available, and this article is focussing on the use of layers in the UK. From the research I have carried out, the CISFB system which has been used widely, lacks layers for more modern systems and has resulted in practices having to modify the layering system which has created a non standard format. This standard was developed from onwards and provides more up to date CAD usage.
